Lye, or sodium hydroxide, is a basic ingredient of soap. It can be dangerous on its own but, you need it to react with the various skin loving oils & butters to create soap. Once lye chemically combines with these fats, it becomes glycerin. Glycerin can draw moisture from the air around us and help keep that moisture in skin. In a finished bar of soap, the lye is completely gone.
As quoted by the CDC: "CDC recommends washing hands with soap and water whenever possible because handwashing reduces the amounts of all types of germs and chemicals on hands. But if soap and water are not available, using a hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol can help you avoid getting sick and spreading germs to others. The guidance for effective handwashing and use of hand sanitizer in community settings was developed based on data from a number of studies." Most of our ingredients are natural. However, many of our soaps, the ones in the section of "Artisan Soaps with Fragrance Oils" are not, as they contain fragrance oils. Unlike essential oils, that are steam distilled pure plant extracts, fragrance oils are developed in a lab. These are chosen sometimes if there is not an available essential oil or if the shelf life of an essential oil is quite short. Many of our coloured micas have natural components to them, but there are a couple of soaps that contain pigment colours. They are listed in the individual ingredient listings.
Your handcrafted soap will last much longer if it is allowed to dry between uses. The soap dishes that we carry are great options - check them out in our soap dish section. If you are not using your soap(s) for extended periods of time, it is best to store them in a cool, dry place away - from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
We recommend you use our products within 6 months for the best results, as the colour and fragrances may begin to fade after that amount of time. However, our soaps will still get you clean after the fragrance and colours are long gone
